Oly is a member of our infrastructure, energy and natural resources practice. He has wide-ranging domestic and international experience advising clients on all aspects of the value chain including M&A, large-scale projects and corporate and commercial matters. Oly has a particular focus on the power and oil & gas sectors, as well as emerging technologies like carbon capture and storage and hydrogen. Oly is a member of the firm’s global steering committees for energy and infrastructure and commercial contracts, and is the co-chair of the Regulatory and Policy Working Group of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association.

Highlights include advising:

Hydrogen and CCS

  • Drax in connection with its Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage Project at Drax Power Station, Yorkshire, to capture approximately 8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, the largest BECCS project in the world
  • Kellas Midstream on its up to 1GW blue hydrogen project known as H2NorthEast and on the disposal of a 50% interest in that project to SSE Thermal and associated joint venture arrangements
  • INEOS E&P A/S on Project Greensand, the most mature project for storage of CO2 in Denmark with the possibility of storing up to 8 million tons of CO2 per year in 2030, representing 13% of Denmark’s emissions
  • in relation to the HyBont HAR1 green hydrogen project, one of the first green hydrogen projects in the UK
  • Spirit Energy in connection with its Morecambe Net Zero CO2 transport and storage project
  • Uniper on its proposed 1.1GW power CCS project at Connah’s Quay
  • VPI on its proposed Humber Zero power CCS project at its 1.2GW Immingham CHP Plant
  • A potential project financing lender in connection with its involvement in the Net Zero Teesside Power CCS project, the Keadby 3 Power CCS project and the Northern Endurance Partnership Track 1 CO2 transport & storage project
  • Multiple other clients on their CCS and low carbon projects and potential investments

Power (including renewables and battery storage)

  • Ørsted on multiple offshore windfarm projects and disposals, including the Hornsea P1 1.2GW offshore wind farm, the Walney Extension 659MW offshore wind farm and the Race Bank 573MW offshore wind farm
  • Deep Wind Offshore in relation to the disposal of a majority interest in, and the entry into a joint venture with BP. The joint venture (structured as four separate joint venture companies) is in respect of four offshore wind projects in South Korea
  • Aker Horizons on its acquisition of Mainstream Renewable Power
  • Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund on its investment alongside the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development into R.Power S.A., a vertically integrate renewable energy developer and independent power producer based in Poland
  • BlackRock Real Assets on a consortium investment in Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, one of the largest renewable energy companies in India
  • BlackRock Diversified Infrastructure Funds Group on its investment of up to USD400 million in Positive Zero, a UAE-based decentralised decarbonisation infrastructure business
  • Drax on its new contract-for-difference for transitional revenue support for Drax Power Station; on its acquisition of Scottish Power's portfolio of pumped storage, hydro and gas-fired generation assets and on the sale of those gas-fired generation assets to VPI
  • Castleton Commodities on its acquisition of a majority stake in L48 Energy, a company that originates, owns, and operates large-scale energy storage systems
  • ENGIE SA on its agreements with the Belgian Government for a project worth up to €2bn to extend the operational life of two nuclear power units by ten years
  • Centrica on its equity and convertible debt investment in Highview Power and project-level debt funding for the Carrington project, one of the largest Liquid Air Energy Storage projects in the world
  • VPI in relation to various project financings for gas-fired power station projects in the UK and Ireland
  • Viridor in connection with its divestiture of a minority stake in its Energy from Waste infrastructure business

Oil & gas

  • Harbour Energy on its participation in the Southern Energy floating liquified natural gas (FLNG) export project in Argentina, including on the bareboat charter, gas supply and shareholder agreements
  • Various BlackRock funds:
    • as co-lead consortium investor in respect of the purchase of a 49% equity stake in Aramco Gas Pipelines Company for $15.5 billion
    • on its purchase of a significant minority equity stake in Saudi Bahrain Pipeline Company from Bapco Energies
    • together with KKR on their US$1 billion disposal of indirect interests in ADNOC Oil Pipelines LLC to ADQ
    • on various other midstream infrastructure investments in a large number of jurisdictions
  • Centrica and Spirit Energy in respect of the sale of Spirit Energy’s Norwegian business to Sval Energi and Equinor
  • HitecVision on its acquisition from Total of a portfolio of upstream oil & gas assets in the North Sea and on the establishment of NEO Energy and various other oil & gas transactions
  • PTTEP on its acquisition of a 10% participating interest in the Ghasha Concession from Wintershall Dea Middle East GmbH and various other oil & gas transactions
  • Alpha Petroleum group on the sale of 100% of Alpha Petroleum Resources Limited, an upstream oil and gas company focusing on the UK North Sea, to Waldorf Production
