We will be running the following virtual presentations during October and November. Please register your place via the links provided. You will not receive a confirmation email or a link to the event until the day before, but your registration will be confirmed on completion of the registration form. The virtual presentations will run on Microsoft Teams and you will have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation.
All of the presentations (except for the Cineworld Group plc case study) will be recorded and will be available on a public facing section of our website and on other appropriate social media platforms. This is so that students who are unable to attend the session also have the opportunity to watch it.

Event description: The Disputes and Investigations team advises on a range of complex matters. In this session, Eleanor Healy-Birt (Disputes and Investigations associate) and a trainee will present our role in defending a client caught up in a tax fraud scheme. With the tax authorities breathing down their necks, the fraudulent companies decided to seek compensation from the companies they traded with, including our client. The case is a long-running saga which could be heading to the Supreme Court later this year.

Event description: Slaughter and May regularly advises Cineworld on many aspects of its global corporate and financing arrangements. The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to challenges for many industries, with the cinema industry being hit particularly hard around the world by the pandemic and governmental responses to it. In this session, Charlotte Eynon (Corporate associate) and Kieran Turton (Financing associate) will explain some of the various ways Slaughter and May has assisted Cineworld to navigate these challenges throughout its international business.

Event description: Emma Walton (Knowledge & Innovation Manager) and Mark Gulliford (Real Estate Associate and a member of our Innovation Network) will provide an overview of our innovation and legal tech projects, from developing the firm’s innovation training programme to rolling out legal technology and running legal process decision workshops with clients. They will also discuss their experiences of client expectations and changing ways of working.

Event description: Slaughter and May is advising the African Export-Import Bank in its partnership with the African Union on Africa’s continent wide vaccine procurement project. In this session, Richard McDonnell (IP/IT associate), Tim Morrison (Corporate associate) and David Cakebread (IP/IT associate) discuss their involvement advising on (i) the establishment of the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust; (ii) an agreement between all African Union member states and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) for the purchase of up to 400 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine; and (iii) the establishment of a pan-African no-fault compensation scheme, which was set up to provide compensation to those who suffer rare and serious side effects following the administration of a vaccine procured by the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust.

Event description: You will need commercial awareness for any career in the city or in professional services, but what exactly do we mean by it and how do you become commercially aware? Claire Cooke (Partner) will explain exactly what commercial awareness means and what you can do to build yours. Claire will also be joined by a trainee who will share their experiences of building and demonstrating commercial awareness in an interview.
