My career journey to Slaughter and May
I’m a failed professional tennis player, so I decided to pursue a career in law whilst at university. I trained and qualified at another firm before joining Slaughter and May in January 2020. I chose Slaughter and May because of the quality of people and work. The transition was unexpected given that I joined around the onset of the pandemic, but the firm met and continues to meet my high expectations!
My day-to-day
My role covers all areas of Disputes and Investigations practice – arbitration, court litigation, investigations and risk advisory work. My clients are sector agnostic, and almost all of my matters have an international element to them. In terms of responsibilities, leadership is key to my role as a Senior Counsel. While the job is demanding, it is a privilege to be able to work on our clients’ most important matters with such talented people.
Collegiality is at the core of the firm and it is tangible. All of my matters require teamwork – not just from those at Slaughter and May but beyond as well…It is critical to the success of the firm and any matter that we work on together.
Collegiality at our core
Collegiality is at the core of the firm and it is tangible. All of my matters require teamwork – not just from those at Slaughter and May but beyond as well – clients, barristers, experts, etc. It is critical to the success of the firm and any matter that we work on together. When everyone on the team is working together at a moment of peak importance on a matter – it could be a filing, a hearing, a settlement – that feeling of collegiality and collaboration is what makes the job so much fun – the highest quality people and work pulling together at a crucial time. I’ve been lucky enough to experience that feeling often since joining the firm.
My advice to candidates
Go for it! It is worth taking the time to carefully consider and tailor each individual application. In particular, I would recommend thinking carefully about your own personal experiences and how they match-up to the firm. We take each application on its own merit so don’t be afraid to be you and don’t be someone you are not.
