MY CAREER JOURNEY WITH THE FIRM
Before joining Slaughter and May, I had already spent several years working at two other law firms, gaining valuable experience in a professional environment. What attracted me to Slaughter and May was its outstanding reputation - I wanted to be part of a firm that sets the benchmark for excellence. I still remember being very impressed with the office and the staff restaurant when I attended my interviews!
I began my career with the firm as an adviser within the Learning and Development team. A significant part of my role centred on managing our trainee solicitor training programme - this responsibility gave me a unique opportunity to experience the breadth of our work and, most importantly, to engage with trainees at every stage of their qualification journey.
As time went on, I embraced new challenges and progressed into management. In May last year, I was proud to be promoted to Senior Manager - a milestone that reflects both my professional growth and my continued commitment to the firm.
MY DAY-TO-DAY
Broadly speaking as a department, we drive excellence through training, research, knowledge management, library services, and professional development - equipping everyone with the insight and skills to serve clients with expertise and confidence. Professional development sits at the heart of what we do. We are committed to supporting career growth for every Slaughter and May employee, offering structured learning pathways and tailored development opportunities that help individuals thrive and achieve their full potential.
The main responsibilities of my role include ensuring seamless operations and strategic alignment across the department. I oversee day-to-day functions, working closely with stakeholders to coordinate resources effectively, maintain robust policies and procedures and manage the department’s budgets and expense forecasts. Beyond operational oversight, I also support on the delivery and implementation of strategic projects. Additionally, people management is a core part of my role and it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my work - challenging at times but always fulfilling.
I love the variety of responsibilities my role affords me - I’m a natural organiser and multi-tasker so my role allows me to flex to my strengths.
And what has made me stay? The people: my Knowledge & Learning colleagues are amazing to work with; they all take pride in what they do and consistently deliver a high-quality service.
EXCELLENCE AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO
I’m often asked in interviews what it’s really like to work here and I give the same answer every time - the firm is filled with high achieving individuals, both in the legal teams and in Business Services, and excellence is at the heart of everything we do – in that respect everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Having been at the firm for some time also means I have a huge network of key contacts I can call on when I need them! And it’s not all about the work – we have a wide range of employee networks and clubs to take part in and there’s plenty of opportunity to socialise with colleagues outside of work too.
