Just Quizzing 5
Fundraising for our new staff voted charity, Shelter, got off to a flying start on 13 October with the firm’s annual general knowledge quiz, Just Quizzing!, raising over £3,000. 41 teams made up of employees and partners (including one team joining by video link from the firm’s Brussels office) entered the quiz, which was organised by the Employee Charity Committee and hosted by our very own quizmaster Mike Ryan. Despite fierce competition from defending champions The Bean Counters, Sorted for Legalese and Quiz carried off the trophy at the end of the night. We look forward to holding more events in support of Shelter’s important work over the coming months.

Legal Toolkit for Charities
Our Legal Toolkit for Charities is now free to download from our website. Intended as a reference tool for UK charities, we hope that the Toolkit will enable charity professionals to better understand some of the legal challenges that they may face in their day-to-day work.

CoRe Programme progress
In September, we hosted an event to mark the mid-way point of the CoRe programme (Community Resourcing programme) that we deliver with Macquarie with support from the BIG Alliance. Representatives from the eight charities involved and the volunteers from Slaughter and May and Macquarie who are working on strategic projects for the charities, came together to share their progress and learnings so far

LSMP graduation
On 29 September, over 200 secondary school students, including those from our partner schools who we hosted on the programme, graduated from the work insight and skills programme delivered by the Legal Social Mobility Partnership (LSMP). At the ceremony, students from Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester heard from Mike Franklin, former IPCC Commissioner and SRA Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee member and Barry Matthews, Head of Legal at ITV. As a founding participant in the scheme, we were proud that an LSMP alumni, Shama Aktar, who we hosted in 2015 and is now studying Law at City University, also took to the stage. Students also took part in a LexisNexis and FutureReach workshop and panel discussion led by Patricia Christias, General Counsel at Microsoft.

A record-breaking year for Bloodwise
A brilliant year of staff fundraising for Bloodwise came to an end on 31 August. There has been something for everyone this year and it has been great to see marathon runners, yoga enthusiasts, bakers, cyclists, triathletes, quiz fans and red sock wearers rally behind the Employee Charity Committee’s fundraising efforts to raise more than ever before for a staff charity. We wish Bloodwise all the best for the future and have thoroughly enjoyed working with them this year.

GCSE & A level results at Central Foundation Boys’ School
Partner school Central Foundation Boys’ School (CFBS) students received stellar A level and GCSE results in August this year, with more students than ever before headed off to Russell Group universities. We support CFBS students academically via an award winning tutoring scheme, the Key Project, in collaboration with education charity The Access Project, and offer guidance and support with university applications and career choices. In the 2015-16 academic year, around 70 members of the firm volunteered on projects with CFBS.
