Insight into ESG

What is ESG and why does it matter to law firms and their clients? ESG has fast become a theme integrated into all of our work at Slaughter and May, and an emergent area of expertise for our lawyers. In this presentation, Lucy Scaramuzza and George Murray - two of our lawyers who specialise in Sustainability and Climate Change - gave an insight into ESG, and the role of lawyers and law firms in this area.

Disputes and Investigations Case study: Defending the “innocent” party in a fraud transaction

The Disputes and Investigations team advises on a range of complex matters. In this session, Eleanor Healy-Birt (Disputes and Investigations associate) and a trainee present our role in defending a client caught up in a tax fraud scheme. With the tax authorities breathing down their necks, the fraudulent companies decided to seek compensation from the companies they traded with, including our client. The case is a long-running saga which could be heading to the Supreme Court later this year.

Innovation

Emma Walton (Knowledge & Innovation Manager) and Mark Gulliford (Real Estate Associate and a member of our Innovation Network) provide an overview of our innovation and legal tech projects, from developing the firm’s innovation training programme to rolling out legal technology and running legal process decision workshops with clients. They also discuss their experiences of client expectations and changing ways of working.

Case study: Johnson & Johnson

Slaughter and May is advising the African Export-Import Bank in its partnership with the African Union on Africa’s continent wide vaccine procurement project. In this session, three associates discuss their involvement advising on (i) the establishment of the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust; (ii) an agreement between all African Union member states and Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) for the purchase of up to 400 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine; and (iii) the establishment of a pan-African no-fault compensation scheme, which was set up to provide compensation to those who suffer rare and serious side effects following the administration of a vaccine procured by the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust.
