Steve qualified with Slaughter and May in 1975. For two years after qualifying he split his time between corporate work and tax work but since 1977 he has concentrated exclusively on corporate tax.
Steve acts for a very wide range of clients across the full range of our practice. He advises on tax structuring and the tax aspects of documenting both private and public mergers, acquisitions, disposals and joint ventures. He acts for investment banks in relation to their structured finance businesses and has for many years been a leading practitioner in the tax aspects of corporate finance (including leasing, securitisations and complex financial instruments).
He has an extensive tax consultancy practice which includes advising on business and transaction structuring, dealing with in-depth tax investigations and tax litigation and doing a large amount of work in the transfer pricing/thin capitalisation area. Much of this involves dealing or negotiating with HM Revenue & Customs.
A large part of Steve's practice involves advising non-UK multinationals (particularly those based in the US) on cross-border transactions of various types. This gives rise to extensive international tax exposure and, consequently, Steve has established excellent relationships with other leading tax advisers around the world.
For many years, Steve has been a regular contributor to a wide variety of tax publications and he is a regular speaker at conferences.
