Charles has a broadly-based corporate practice, which has encompassed mergers and acquisitions; energy-related matters; and public sector work, most recently in relation to financial stability and bank restructuring.

Highlights include advising:

  • HM Treasury on a range of assignments arising from the credit crunch, including Northern Rock; Bradford & Bingley; the Icelandic banks; the recapitalisation of the banking sector, including the investment of up to £45 billion in shares of RBS and £23 billion in shares of the merged Lloyds/HBOS; and the Asset Protection Scheme
  • Centrica on its takeover of Venture Production
  • Apollo Management on the acquisition of Countrywide
  • Cairn India on its restructuring and IPO
  • Bertelsmann on the sale of BMG Music Publishing Group to Universal Music Group
  • RWE on its sale of Thames Water Holdings plc to Kemble Water Limited
  • HM Government on the restructuring and disposal of British Energy
  • Aviva on its acquisition of RAC
  • HM Government on the privatisations of British Gas and the electricity industry in England and Wales
