Charles has a broad advisory and transactional practice covering pensions and employment.

His advisory practice covers trustees and sponsoring employers in relation to pension schemes, particularly in the industrial and manufacturing sectors. 

Charles’ relevant advisory experience covers funding/covenant negotiations, benefit change exercises (including United Utilities PLC's 2010 pension benefit change exercise) and scheme mergers.

His recent transactional experience includes:

  • INEOS' disposal of its international fluorochemicals business, with operations located in the UK, US and Japan, to Mexichem SA de CV
  • Global Infrastructure Partners' acquisition of Gatwick Airport and the establishment of the Gatwick Airport Pension Plan
  • Unilever's binding offer to acquire the Worldwide Body Care and European Detergents businesses of Sara Lee Corporation
  • Akzo Nobel NV’s takeover of ICI including the ICI Pension Fund
  • Akzo Nobel NV’s sale of its Crown Paints business
  • United Utilities PLC’s sale of its electricity business including the demerger of its section of the Electricity Supply Pension Scheme

Charles is Chairman of the Legislative & Parliamentary Sub-committee of the Association of Pension Lawyers which meets monthly to consider and comment on draft and new pensions legislation. He is also a contributor to Weinberg & Blank on Takeovers and Mergers. He is listed as a leading individual in the pensions section of Chambers UK, 2012.
