New rules, wider reach: the extraterritorial scope of the GDPR

June 2016 | Newsletter/briefing

This briefing is part of a series of publications on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (the GDPR) which will apply in all Member States from 25 May 2018.

The GDPR expands the extra-territorial reach of the EU data protection regime and will capture a greater number of overseas businesses. This briefing explains why this development comes as no surprise and considers some of the intended (and unintended) consequences of the GDPR’s provisions, including issues around enforceability.
