Sydney secondment story

I’m on secondment to Corrs Chambers Westgarth’s Sydney office, a leading independent law firm with offices across Australia.

I'm currently sitting with the Banking and Finance team and I've already had the opportunity to work with the Corporate and Competition teams and will be going to an IP hearing next week. I've been involved in a variety of interesting matters and have drafted documents, worked on due diligence and researched points of both Australian and English law.

The office is amazing – very modern and completely open plan, which may take some getting used to, but was great as a new starter and makes for an inclusive working environment. I can see the Harbour Bridge from my desk (a small glimpse, but still...!) and there's an outdoor terrace on the eighteenth floor with great views. My colleagues have been very welcoming and the firm puts on monthly drinks, which is a great way to get to know people. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in sport and the active Australian lifestyle – I've been doing yoga, Boot Camp and playing netball... all good fun!

Sydney is a fantastic and easy place to live (especially in the Aussie summer/British winter). The city is vibrant with lots to see and do. I've been having lunches and drinks in town, gone to Bondi beach and made the most of weekends by exploring other parts of Australia. I've been diving at the Great Barrier Reef, visited some wineries and travelled to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I also went to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup – "the race that stops the nation". I'm really looking forward to New Year too as some friends and I are taking a boat out on the harbour to watch the fireworks.

My secondment to Corrs has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it will be hard to return home.
