Singapore secondment story
It is only three weeks since I began my secondment at Allen & Gledhill but between team lunches, after – work drinks with colleagues and the friendly atmosphere at the firm, I have already been made to feel at home.
Allen & Gledhill is one of Singapore’s leading firms and I am sitting in its Corporate/M&A department, which has an excellent reputation for doing high – profile work, frequently with an international dimension. Already I have been exposed to deals involving parties and assets in jurisdictions including China, Japan and the Philippines. The strong relationship between Allen & Gledhill and Slaughter and May is also evident. I have attended a presentation by Nigel Boardman, a partner at Slaughter and May, to lawyers and clients at Allen & Gledhill’s office and in a couple of months I will be travelling to Manila for a training event with lawyers from Slaughter and May’s Hong Kong office, Allen & Gledhill and over twenty Asian firms with whom we have relationships.
Outside the office, adjusting to life in Singapore has been very easy. The city is clean, safe and extremely easy to get around. The food, particularly at the bustling hawker centres, is second to none and whether you fancy a day on the beach at Sentosa or an afternoon in Chinatown there is always something to do (and someone to do it with – there are over 50 London-based trainees here at the moment).
Singapore is also a perfect base from which to travel and I fully intend to make the most of it. I have already spent a weekend in Malaysia and am planning trips to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia (at least once!) during my six months here.
