International secondments

Our trainees have the opportunity to work abroad during the second year of their training contract. They can choose between working in one of our own offices or going on secondment to one of the market – leading firms we regularly work with.

An international secondment is an excellent opportunity to experience working in a different environment and jurisdiction. We take care of all the practical arrangements, including flights, accommodation and work permits, and will continue to offer you support while you are away.

After qualification there are further opportunities to go on secondment either overseas or to clients.

I have already ticked off gorgeous beaches, a plethora of vineyards, mountains, forests, thermal springs and great lakes from my long list of 'must-sees'. New Zealand is certainly a country of great variety and I am enjoying exploring every corner!

A secondment to our Brussels office has been a great start to my seat in our Competition group...

Copenhagen

Copenhagen

The Danes, according to a recent survey, are the happiest people on the planet - although, as one local paper remarked, "nobody seems to have told us". Despite such modesty, living and working in Copenhagen makes it easy to see why people are content with life...

Dubai
Emma Girot
Dubai

From the roof of my apartment building on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main thoroughfare, you can hear the adhaan, the call to prayer, five times a day from two different mosques...

Düsseldorf
Sjoerd van der Zwaag
Düsseldorf

There is more to Germany than beer and bratwurst. Of course this is stating the obvious. However, it is worth repeating as telling others about my six-month adventure in Düsseldorf did not always result in the same enthusiastic response as I would have received for destinations such as Paris or Hong Kong...

Helsinki
Alexander Chadd
Helsinki

Although my Finnish lessons are proceeding at a good rate, it was a pleasant surprise to arrive in Helsinki to find that nearly all Finns speak perfect English. The cuisine, far from being restricted to soused herring washed down with vodka, is delicious, and the Finnish people are uniformly friendly...

Hong Kong
Francesca Parker
Hong Kong

Hong Kong is an unusual mixture of city skylines, hiking, goldfish markets and champagne brunches – meaning there is never a dull moment...

My six-month secondment to our London office was a fantastic culmination to my training contract and has undoubtedly helped prepare me for qualifying as a solicitor back in our Hong Kong office....

Oslo
Andrew Gilbert
Oslo

The typical response when I told people I was going to spend the winter in Oslo was "Isn’t it going to be REALLY cold and REALLY dark?". They were right, but the reception I received at BA-HR could not have been warmer or brighter...

Seeing the Arc de Triomphe on my walk to the Bredin Prat office every morning is the perfect start to the day...

Singapore

It is only three weeks since I began my secondment at Allen & Gledhill but between team lunches, after work drinks with colleagues and the friendly atmosphere at the firm, I have already been made to feel at home...

Sydney
Chelsea McClements
Sydney

I’m on secondment to Corrs Chambers Westgarth’s Sydney office, a leading independent law firm with offices across Australia. I'm currently sitting with the Banking and Finance team and I've already had the opportunity to work with the Corporate and Competition teams and will be going to an IP hearing next week...

Tokyo
James Mead
Tokyo

There’s a phrase in Japanese, "sugoi!", which is broadly translated as "oh wow!". Frequently uttered with a look of surprised delight, it perfectly describes my secondment to Anderson, Mori and Tomotsune, Tokyo so far...

Toronto
Rachel Kitchman
Toronto

My first day at Stikeman Elliott in Toronto also happened to be my birthday. After a relaxed brunch and a number of training sessions, I was presented with a huge birthday cake and had 'Happy Birthday' sung to me by 20 people I’d never met! It was a lovely touch and proved to be a great introduction to the firm...

Washington
Tim Meade
Washington

Beyond the famous landmarks, monuments, memorials and museums that embody the city’s impressive history and continued international significance, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I touched town in Washington...
