To train as a solicitor in England and Wales, students who have completed their undergraduate law degree at a Scottish university will be required by the SRA to complete certain modules from the GDL course before beginning the LPC.

As the content of Scottish law degrees varies, the SRA will review each case individually to reach a decision regarding which GDL modules need to be completed. Usually, at least two modules, Land and Equity & Trusts, need to be taken. However, in some cases, students are also required to study the Tort and Criminal Law modules.

Although students normally have to study for these extra modules over a full academic year, it is possible, and common, to opt for distance/online learning. Studying for these extra modules is equivalent to completing a part-time course, so most students also work during this year.

If you secure a training contract with us, we will pay the GDL fees in addition to a maintenance grant to help towards living costs during this year.

The same financial support is also available for the LPC - we will pay the fees for this course and also award a maintenance grant for the year, currently £7,450.

Slaughter and May is part of a consortium of firms that has developed a new City LPC. The City LPC is an accelerated course studied over a period of approximately 7.5 months (as opposed to the traditional course length of 10 months). Students opting to convert to English law could therefore start their training contract only six months later than those who decide to practice in Scotland.
